Why this page exists

We think you should be able to see where a fact came from before you rely on it. This page lists every source CarTraceAI consults, and what each one can and cannot tell you.

NHTSA vehicle product information catalog

Operated by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It decodes a vehicle identification number into the specification the manufacturer recorded: model year, make, model, body style, engine, drivetrain, safety equipment and plant of manufacture.

It is a public government service and it is free. We hold no commercial licence with it, and it places no restriction on showing you what it returns.

What it cannot tell you: anything that happened to a specific vehicle after it left the factory. It holds no accident, odometer, title, theft or service records.

Sources we do not yet have

Accident history, odometer history, title and salvage status, theft records and service history all require commercial licences we have not yet obtained.

Until we do, every one of those sections is shown as having no licensed source. We would rather show you an honest gap than a confident blank.

How we label coverage

Every section of a result carries a coverage state. Available means a source answered with data. No record returned means we asked and the source had nothing. Not checked means we did not ask. Not covered means we hold no licence to ask.

None of these states means an event did not happen. A source having no record is a fact about the source, not about the vehicle.
